Build Your Own Whirligig Contest -

Build a whimsical, colorful, kinetic outdoor sculpture usually made of found materials and WIN!Bring together your friends, family, neighbors or co-workers and participate in the annual Whirligig Festival in a creative way. Search your back yard and garage for unused materials and create your own Whirligig to win $$!

Build it high, low, wide or even with a theme – just build it!  Make sure it whirls in the wind and stand back while Wilsonians oooohhh and aaahhh at your creation.

Things to remember:

  • Contest Entry forms due one week prior to the festival, by 5 pm Friday, Oct. 28th . Registration is required to be considered for a prize. A photo of the whirligig must be submitted with the form.
  • Whirligigs must be made out of recycled or “found” materials. 
  • Whirligigs must whirl by only wind power, no other power source may be used.
  • Winners from the previous year(s) may not resubmit the same whirligig for consideration. Reusing pieces of previously judged whirligigs are acceptable, but major changes must be added or made to be considered. For example, a new paint job or different dangling pieces would not be considered a significant change.  
  • All entries must be hand delivered and installed by the artist the Saturday morning, Nov. 5th,  of the festival by 9:00 a.m. at the designated display area in the festival zone. 
  • Each whirligig should have a label or sign that give the whirligig a name, identifies the category and creator.
  • All entries will remain on display until the close of the festival at 5 p.m. on Sunday.
  • All entries must be picked up and removed from the display area by 7 p.m. on Sunday.
  • Any unclaimed entries become the property of the Wilson Whirligig Festival. 
  • Prior to judging, the sign or label displaying the whirligig’s name and creator will be removed or covered to keep the judging unbiased.
  • Judging will take place during Saturday of the festival.
  • Judges will remain anonymous and include several local artists, members of the VSWPP Conservation and the original Wilson Whirligig creator, Vollis Simpson,  if available.
  • Ribbons for recognition and honorable mention may be determined by the judges.
  • Winners will be announced just before the last band performance on the yellow stage, on Saturday, Nov. 5th,  typically around 3 pm.

    Whirligig Festival - Photo of the Year Contest!

    Are you a natural photographer or just enjoy taking snapshots? The Wilson Whirligig Festival searches for the best photo that features the festival, a whirligig or something that whirls!  Enter today!

    Entries must be orginial photographs.
    Individuals may submit one entry in each category.
    The contest is open to photographers of all ages.
    The winning photographer in each category will win $50!

    Contest photo categories:
    • Whirligigs - photo must be of a whirligig, made by Vollis Simpson, or another artist
    • Festival - photo must be of activities during the festival
    • Whirl - photo must be of anything that "whirls", open for photographer interpretation!
